Bondi turned it on for the USANA SurfAid Cup Bondi 2018 on Friday 18 May, with 13 teams raising over $125,000 for SurfAid’s Mother and Child Health Programmes helping support clean water & sanitation, basic healthcare, and improved nutrition in remote villages in Indonesia near iconic surf breaks.

A solid south swell lit up consistent rip bowls with all teams going to town.  The size of the swell may have been a factor in renowned big wave chargers Laura Enever and Flick Palmateer getting snapped up early in the pro pick by our Champion Fundraisers, USANA, and the under 18 all girls team respectively.

This year’s event in Bondi was remarkable for a number of reasons, not just because a baby shark cruising around set the alarm off ahead of Heat 1, but because we had the Surfing Mums enter the comp with toddlers at our toes all morning; our ambitious naming sponsor USANA, a global health and wellness company, topped our SurfAid Cup team fundraising record with over $45,000 contributed; and, we saw the first ever under 18 all girls team enter a SurfAid Cup and raise over $10,000. The shark must've known we had a comp to run too, because she didn't drop in again!" said SurfAid Founder Dr. Dave Jenkins.

SurfAid Ambassador and professional surfer Felicity Palmateer said “Having just returned from the Mentawai Islands, I know how beneficial days like these are - it was a privilege to surf with the Bondi under 18 girls team today at the SurfAid Cup! Huge effort for a great cause! Education, medical aid and a whole lot more headed to the beautiful people of the Mentawai in Indonesia”.

In the semis the comp heated up. The outgoing tide provided some challenges with a lot of bomb sets closing on the outer banks, but USANA SurfAid Cup pro surfers could be seen sharing their experienced competitive tips with their teammates.

While all teams surfed skillfully, the final heat saw Hurley team rider Jamie Krups make the most of the afternoon onshores stomping a massive air and helping Team Waverley College land 5th place. Former Mick Fanning Coach and Cochlear Ambassador Andy King with former professional Beau Mitchell, lent their competitive nous to Cochlear securing them 4th place. In the end, local Bondi knowledge came to the fore with Pipeline Plumbing bagging ‘Champion Surfers’ bragging rights, narrowly ahead of Fishbowl and longstanding SurfAid supporters and previous 2x SurfAid Cup Sydney title holders, Aquabumps.

To be a part of the USANA SurfAid Cup was a complete honour. The USANA family and True Health Foundation passionately came together as a team raising over $45,000! This achievement can hopefully bring some relief to remote communities in Indonesia with the supply of clean water, sanitation and improved nutrition. This is just the beginning for us and we are  thrilled to work alongside SurfAid again to bring positive change through awareness and much needed funds making a sustainable community impact” said USANA’s Chief Field Development Officer, David Mulham.

SurfAid Cups are about more than the surf, they’re about Gotong Royong, which in Bahasa means teamwork. We are enormously grateful to USANA, Sally Mac from the Mermaid Society, Surfing NSW, Power Living, CoastalWatch, Surfing World, The Well, The Bucket List, StickyBumps, KeySun Zinke Kudosurf and Firewire Surfboards.
