Iconic Bondi beach once again hosted the USANA SurfAid Cup on Friday May 3, with 14 teams raising over $100,000 for SurfAid’s Mother and Child Health Programmes helping support clean water & sanitation, basic healthcare, and improved nutrition in remote villages, near where surfers travel for amazing waves.
The event brought together iconic local businesses Fishbowl, Aquabumps, Beach Road Hotel, The Bucket List/Beach Grit, Pipeline Plumbing, Power Living Yoga and Beach Burrito Co, city-based BWM-Dentsu, event naming sponsor USANA, North & Bondi and all girls team Foamie Friends to battle it out for the fundraising & surfing championships. Welcomed to the roster for the first time were local schools Matraville Sports High and Bondi Beach Public School, who entered a year 6 team - the youngest team ever to compete in a SurfAid Cup worldwide. Waverley College, participating in this event for the third time, shattered their previous fundraising record by raising over $6,000.
Casper Ettleson, co-founder of Fishbowl and this year’s Surfing Champions said, “Not only does the event raise money and give back to the people in places we love to surf, it brings local businesses together and builds our community”.

Now in its third year, the USANA SurfAid Cup Bondi 2019 presented one of the most exciting pro line-ups the event has seen: Taj Burrow, Felicity Palmateer, Johnny Gannon, Sage Gubbay, Cheyne Horan, Simon Anderson, Monty Tait, Gerard McCallum, Jamie Krups, Toby Martin, Zac Michael, Kobi Clements, Austin Ware & Duke Kelleher all donated their time to surf in the event.

In the final, Toby Martin’s last wave “brought back some of the old magic”, his score bringing Team Fishbowl in to the lead and taking home Champion Surfer bragging rights, successfully defending their title from the SurfAid Cup Manly in September 2018.

SurfAid Cups are about more than the surf, they’re about ‘Gotong Royong’, which in Bahasa Indonesian means ‘teamwork’. SurfAid is enormously grateful to naming sponsor USANA and event partners Surfing NSW, The Well, Fishbowl, The Bucket List, Carve, Bound by Sea, Away Co & KeySun Zinke.
