2018 Wrap Up from SurfAid Founder Dr. Dave Jenkins
Saturday, December 29, 2018
As we head into the final days of 2018, I’d like to personally thank you for supporting SurfAid this past year. Thanks to you, we have saved and improved the lives of thousands of people and we’ve continued to grow into an efficient and highly effective organisation.
I'm proud of everything SurfAid has achieved, but especially proud of SurfAid’s responsiveness - embracing learning and continuously improving while staying true to our core mission.
During SurfAid’s first malaria prevention project, we learned we were more effective when we empowered locals to manage their own programs. We introduced the use of long-lasting insecticide nets, massively reducing malaria. Most recently in Sumbawa, SurfAid is among the first NGO’s to introduce a solar powered drip irrigation pilot project for farming. This is especially useful in this exceptionally arid region, providing families access to healthy food and economic opportunities.
Focusing on our goal to achieve lasting and transformative change, SurfAid has expanded our Mother and Child Health Programmes. A key success of these programmes has been a steady decline in maternal and child death, by as much as 90% in Nias.
We have always focused on measurable impact and here are just some of the impressive achievements we can report at the close of this year:
In 2019 we will continue our successful projects in the Mentawai, Nias, Sumba, and Sumbawa. Early in the year, we will build on our tradition of giving back to communities who share their waves with us as SurfAid USA launches a program to support our neighbours in Baja California.
You are part of the SurfAid tribe and I hope you are proud of what we have collectively achieved. I look forward to sharing with you many more success stories as we roll out new and expanded projects. On behalf of the thousands of people whose lives are now more vibrant, healthier, and happier, many heartfelt thanks.
Yours Warmly –
Dr. Dave Jenkins
PS. Thank you to everyone who has donated in 2018. There’s still time to make an impact as we head into 2019. Please consider donating today!
